What Colors Can You Use in a Neutral Bedroom?

Bedroom with an upholstered bed, layered neutral bedding, faux fur throw, framed animal art, leopard bench, warm lamps, and a window seat

Neutral bedroom colors give you so many beautiful choices beyond white and beige.

Cream, oatmeal, sand, taupe, and gray can keep the room light.

Greige mixes gray and beige, so it can look lovely with warm or cool pieces.

Caramel, chocolate brown, charcoal, and black can make the lighter colors stand out.

For warm neutral bedroom ideas, begin with cream, beige, brown, and the wood you already love.

If you enjoy cooler neutral bedroom designs, try white, pale gray, charcoal, and a little black.

Not sure where to begin?

Try my doorway color test.

Stand in the doorway and find the color you see the most on a piece that will stay.

It may come from the floor, dresser, bed, or curtains.

Hold paint cards or fabric samples next to that color.

Choose two or three shades that look beautiful with it.

Many lovely neutral bedroom designs begin with this one easy choice.

Now you have a color plan built around pieces you already enjoy.

Begin With the Bedroom Furniture You Already Love

Warm neutral bedroom for couples with an upholstered bed, matching nightstands, bedside lighting, and a curved loveseat

Before you fill a shopping cart, take one more look at the furniture already in your bedroom.

That wood dresser or upholstered bed may look beautiful with lighter colors and softer fabric around it.

You may need only one new piece instead of a whole room filled with new furniture.

1. Keep the Warm Wood Furniture You Love

Walnut bedside chest with a water carafe, drinking glass, jewelry dish, phone charger, reed diffuser, and brass lamp beside an upholstered bed

Warm wood can make a bedroom feel richer and more comfortable.

I use warm wood throughout my own home, including my bedroom, because I love the cozy feeling it brings.

If you have deep brown solid wood bedroom furniture, you can create a lighter room around the pieces you already have and love.

Add cream bedding, pale curtains, or a light bedroom area rug to brighten the space around it.

Leave some open wall and floor around your largest wood piece so you can see its shape.

Next, repeat that brown in a picture frame, lamp base, or throw at the foot of the bed.

Look for the same warm brown in two or three places around the room.

When you see it again, the wood pieces look connected without matching exactly.

Keep the wood you love and build the room around it.

2. Mix Old and New Bedroom Furniture

Small bedroom with slim wood nightstands and wall-mounted globe lights beside the bed

Bedroom furniture sets can make shopping easier, but pieces you choose over time can look just as lovely together.

An older wood dresser can look wonderful beside a new upholstered bed frame.

Your neutral bedroom furniture doesn’t need to match in color or style.

Look for one detail that appears more than once.

Maybe the dresser and bed both have straight lines, or the nightstands and lamps share a warm brass finish.

That one repeat helps the old and new pieces look like they were chosen for the same room.

If you’re shopping online for a king upholstered bed, begin with the size chart and customer photos.

Check the full width, length, and headboard height to make sure the bed fits between the nightstands and below any wall art.

Customer photos can help you see whether the fabric looks cream, beige, taupe, or gray in a real bedroom.

For more comfort, look for a padded headboard you can lean against while reading or watching television.

If you need more storage, an upholstered storage bed can give you drawers under the mattress without adding another dresser.

When the bed fits your room and has the features you want, choose the color you’ll love waking up to.

That one new piece can make the whole neutral bedroom look softer, lighter, and beautifully finished.

Mix Neutral Colors Without Matching Every Shade

You don’t need to open twenty shopping tabs trying to find the exact same shade of cream.

Neutral bedroom decorating ideas become much easier when you mix white, ivory, cream, and beige instead of treating them as one color.

Look for shades that are different enough to notice when the fabrics sit side by side.

3. Let White and Cream Look Different

Modern neutral bedroom with a sculptural white pendant light, upholstered bed, and tall windows

White and cream look beautiful together when you can see the difference between them.

Try white sheets under an ivory cotton duvet cover.

Or pair white curtains with a cream upholstered bed and warm beige walls.

If two fabrics almost match, the cream one may look yellow beside the white one.

Choose a warmer beige or a brighter white so you can see the difference.

This is one of my favorite beige bedroom ideas because it keeps the room light while bringing warmth around the bed.

For more help deciding where each color should go, use my Bedroom Color Rule of 3.

4. Warm Up Gray and Beige

Warm neutral bedroom with gray carpet, a curved cream upholstered bed, rust-colored pillows and throw, brass lamps, and large circular wall art.

Gray carpet or gray bedroom furniture doesn’t mean the whole room has to stay cool.

You might be thinking, “But, Jaymie, what if I love warm bedrooms and I’m stuck with gray carpet?”

Bring cream, oatmeal, beige, and warm wood close to the bed, where you’ll see and touch them most.

An oatmeal headboard, warm beige bedding, or brown bedroom area rug can make the gray look warmer.

When you’re choosing neutral bedroom paint colors, paint each shade on a large sample board.

A tiny paint chip can look very different once the color covers a whole wall.

Move the board around the room during the day.

Check it again after sunset with your lamps on.

The shade that still looks warm may be the one that gives you the bedroom you’ve been picturing.

Add a Little Darkness to Make the Lighter Colors Stand Out

Neutral bedroom with a cream upholstered bed, dark accent wall, warm wood nightstands, abstract art, and a drum ceiling light.

A room filled with pale neutrals can be lovely, but the bed, wall, and rug may all start to look the same.

Look at the room from the doorway.

Can you tell where the bed ends and the wall begins?

If not, one deeper color can help each piece stand out.

5. Bring Rich Brown Beside Cream and Beige

Warm neutral bedroom with rich brown bedding, cream curtains, wood nightstands, and a light area rug

Chocolate brown, walnut, and deep taupe add warmth while making cream bedding look even lighter.

Try a rich brown throw, upholstered bench, wood nightstand, or wide picture frame.

A neutral bedroom with dark furniture can still look bright when you add pale curtains and a cream rug.

Next, repeat that brown in two small spots across the room.

A brown lamp base, pillow, or basket on the other side will help the room look balanced.

One large brown piece and two smaller repeats can be plenty.

6. Repeat Black or Charcoal in Small Places

Neutral bedroom with cream bedding, walnut nightstands, and black lighting repeated around the room

Black can make pale neutral bedroom decor stand out.

Try it on a slim curtain rod, lamp base, mirror frame, or drawer pull.

Many modern neutral bedroom ideas use small black details to make white walls and cream fabric stand out.

Step back and look at where the black appears.

If you see it only beside the bed, add one small black detail on the other side of the room.

For a bolder look, paint a black accent wall or deep brown wall behind the bed.

Modern bedroom with a black paneled wall, beige upholstered bed, blush bedding, wood nightstands, and floor-to-ceiling curtains

The dark paint will make cream bedding and warm wood stand out.

My black accent wall bedroom ideas can help you picture the finished room before you pick up a paintbrush.

Make the Bed the Place You Can’t Wait to Settle Into

Your bed is where you read one more page, take a break in the middle of the day, and settle under the covers at night.

The best neutral bedding looks beautiful and helps you get so very comfortable.

7. Add an Upholstered Headboard or Bed

Luxury bedroom with a camel channel-tufted headboard, layered cream and rust bedding, black-framed windows, floor-to-ceiling curtains, and a brass chandelier

An upholstered headboard gives you a soft place to lean while you read, watch television, or enjoy coffee in bed.

Picture how nice it would be to sit back without stacking three pillows behind you first.

Cream, oatmeal, taupe, camel, and warm gray look beautiful with many neutral bedding colors.

A full upholstered bed frame brings even more soft fabric into the room.

If you don’t need a new bed frame, shop for an upholstered headboard that works with the frame you already own.

When you shop online, begin with the measurements on the product page.

Check the full width, length, and headboard height, especially when you’re choosing a king upholstered bed.

Use painter’s tape to mark those measurements on the wall and floor.

JAYMIE’S PRO TIP

But Jaymie, Will the Headboard Look Tall Enough?

Mark the top of your mattress and pillows inside the taped headboard outline. A thick mattress and tall pillows can hide more of a low headboard than the product photo shows. Make sure enough of the headboard will still be visible.

Then step back to the bedroom door and make sure the bed won’t crowd the lamps, curtains, or windows.

Product photos will show you the shape, while customer photos can help you see how the color looks in real bedrooms.

Read the reviews for more help with the fabric, comfort, assembly, and cleaning.

If you need more storage, an upholstered storage bed can give you drawers and a comfortable headboard in one purchase.

When the bed fits your room and has the features you want, choose the color you’ll love waking up to.

Soon, you may have a beautiful place to lean back, get comfortable, and enjoy your bedroom during the day as well as at night.

8. Choose a Linen or Cotton Duvet Cover

Warm neutral bedroom with taupe walls, cream bedding, wood furniture, and a rust-orange throw blanket

Your duvet cover takes up most of the bed, so it helps set the color for the whole room.

Linen bedding has small natural wrinkles that look beautiful with warm wood and painted furniture.

A linen duvet cover is a lovely choice if you enjoy that soft, relaxed look.

If you like smoother bedding, a cotton duvet cover may be a better fit for you.

Choose the fabric you’ll enjoy touching and can wash without a fuss.

Before you buy, check the length and width of both the duvet cover and the insert.

Two items marked queen or king may not be the same size.

Matching those sizes helps the insert reach the corners instead of bunching in the middle of the night.

Luxury bedding doesn’t need to mean a bed piled with pieces you have to move before you can climb into it.

Look for soft fabric, strong seams, easy washing, and enough width to cover both sides of the mattress.

When you compare luxury comforter sets, read what comes with each set instead of choosing from the pretty photo alone.

If bamboo sheets or a silk pillowcase feel wonderful against your skin, they may be worth adding.

Choose the bedding you’ll be happy to use on an ordinary Tuesday night.

That’s the kind of luxury that can make your bedroom better every day.

9. Make the Bed Softer With a Mattress Topper

Beautiful neutral bedding can change how your bed looks, but the layers underneath decide how it feels.

If your mattress is still in good shape but feels too firm, a mattress topper may add the softness you want without the cost of a new mattress.

My readers have been buying a dual-layer cooling mattress topper with a pillow top and 2.5 inches of gel-infused memory foam.

The pillow top adds a soft, cushioned surface, while the memory foam gives you another layer of comfort underneath.

Before you order, check the topper’s measurements and thickness on the product page.

Look through the customer photos to see how much height it adds to the bed.

A thicker mattress topper may need deep-pocket fitted sheets to cover the mattress and topper together.

Read the washing directions too, so you know which parts can be removed and cleaned.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Will It Fit in Your Washer?

Make sure your washer is large enough for the duvet cover or washable rug. If the care directions call for a larger machine, plan for the laundromat or choose another size. Know how you’ll wash it before you buy it.

When the bed feels wonderfully comfortable underneath, every beautiful layer above it becomes even nicer to enjoy.

10. Keep a Faux Fur Throw Close Enough to Use

bed with faux fur blanket

A faux fur throw blanket can make a neutral bed or bedroom chair look softer in seconds.

More than anything, it gives you something warm to pull close during an afternoon break or chilly evening.

Choose a shade that stands out from the fabric below it.

An ivory throw may blend into cream bedding.

Oatmeal, brown, or charcoal will be easier to see from across the room.

Check the size and washing directions before you buy, especially if you plan to use the throw often.

Some throws look large in product photos and arrive barely big enough to cover your knees.

Drape yours across one corner of the bed or place it over the arm of a chair.

Keep it where you can grab it during a break or chilly night.

It doesn’t need a five-minute folding ceremony each morning.

The prettiest throw in the room should be the one you reach for.

Add Pattern While the Colors Stay Restful

Neutral colors still leave plenty of room for stripes, checks, and beautiful prints.

One pattern may be all you need to help the cream, beige, gray, and brown layers stand apart.

11. Try Neutral Stripes, Checks, or Botanical Prints

Neutral bedroom with botanical wall art, green pillows, matching wood nightstands, and a striped upholstered bench

Think about the patterns that always make you stop and look again.

Cream-and-taupe stripes can add simple lines to the bed, while a small check brings in detail you’ll notice up close.

Botanical wall art can bring the shapes of leaves and branches into the bedroom without adding bright color.

For a small change, try one lumbar pillow or a pair of pillow shams.

Want to see more of the pattern?

Patterned curtains cover more of the wall, so they can change the look of the whole bedroom.

When you shop online, enlarge the product photos and look through the customer pictures.

Notice how large the lines, checks, or leaves look beside the bed, pillow, or window.

A larger print will be easier to see across your bedroom, while a tiny pattern may look like one solid color from the doorway.

When the print has strong black or brown lines, keep the nearby bedding simple.

That way, you can enjoy the pattern without making the bed look busy.

12. Add Pattern With a Neutral Rug or Wallpaper

Warm neutral bedroom with cream bedding, natural wood furniture, soft lighting, and a cozy reading chair

A patterned rug can bring beauty under your feet while the bedding stays simple.

Look for neutral area rugs with faded shapes, a cream border, or thin lines that repeat colors from the room.

Stand beside the bed and notice where your feet touch the floor each morning.

Make sure the bedroom area rug covers that spot instead of hiding so far under the bed that you never get to enjoy it.

In a large room, choose a wide rug that reaches your feet on both sides of the bed.

A runner rug may be just right for a smaller room, and you can still enjoy the wood floor around it.

If pets share your bedroom, a washable bedroom rug can make cream and beige much easier to enjoy.

Would you rather keep the floor simple?

Neutral bedroom wallpaper can bring pattern behind the bed without taking up any floor space.

Place it on the bed wall when you want that part of the room to stand out.

Cover all four walls when you want the pattern around the whole room.

Order a large wallpaper sample and tape it to the wall for a few days.

Look at it from the bed, the doorway, and again after your lamps come on.

A pattern is much easier to love when you’ve seen it in your own light.

Mix Soft Fabric With Warm Wood, Glass, and Metal

Soft fabric beside warm wood, smooth glass, or metal can make a neutral bedroom look richer.

Run your hand across the bedding, nightstand, and lamp.

Each surface feels different, even when every piece is cream, beige, or brown.

That mix gives you more detail to enjoy without adding another color.

13. Mix Fabric, Wood, Glass, and Metal Around the Bed

Cream upholstered bed with layered bedding, walnut nightstands, glass lamps, a wood slat wall, and a cushioned bench

An upholstered bed frame looks beautiful beside solid wood nightstands.

You can see the soft fabric and wood grain, even when both pieces are beige or brown.

Bedside table lamps made from glass, glazed ceramic, or metal can add a little shine without changing your neutral colors.

Look around the bed and notice which surface you see the most.

If almost everything is wood, add fabric with a headboard, curtains, or bedroom storage bench.

When the room already has plenty of fabric, try a glass lamp or slim metal picture frame.

A bedroom storage bench can hide extra bedding and give you a comfortable place to sit while you put on shoes.

Measure the walkway first so the bench doesn’t turn every trip around the bed into an obstacle course.

In a small bedroom, skip the bench and add fabric with curtain panels or an upholstered headboard.

For a larger change, wood slat wall panels can add warm color and beautiful wood grain behind the bed.

Mark the area with painter’s tape so you can see how much of the wall the panels will cover.

You can keep the colors simple and let each material add something beautiful.

14. Add a Few Curves Around the Straight Furniture

Warm neutral bedroom with black-framed windows, dark wood furniture, two curved cream chairs, taupe curtains, and abstract wall art

Beds, dressers, nightstands, windows, and picture frames bring many straight lines into a bedroom.

A round mirror, curved lamp, or bedroom accent chair can break up all those rectangles without adding another color.

Look for the part of the room with the most straight lines.

Place one curved piece there.

Beside a boxy nightstand, a lamp with a round base may be all you need.

An empty corner may have room for a bedroom accent chair with a curved back and soft arms.

Turn the chair toward a window or lamp, and you’ll have a lovely place to read or take a break during the day.

Make sure you can still open nearby drawers and walk around the bed.

When floor space is tight, hang a round mirror or choose a curved wall sconce instead.

You’ll break up the straight lines and still have room to walk.

Let the Art and Pieces You Love Make the Bedroom Yours

Neutral colors make a lovely background for the art, photos, and pieces you already love.

Those favorite pieces turn a pretty bedroom into your own retreat instead of a room anyone could have ordered.

15. Keep the Artwork You Love

Cream upholstered bed with layered neutral bedding beneath large landscape wall art featuring golden trees and mountains

Your artwork doesn’t have to be beige just because your bedroom is neutral.

A favorite painting may have forest green, deep blue, rust, gold, or another color you love.

Those colors can stand out beautifully beside cream bedding and pale curtains.

If you prefer neutral wall art, choose a picture with both light and dark areas so the image is easy to see from bed.

For large wall art above a wide headboard, look for a piece about two-thirds as wide as the headboard.

Step back to the doorway and make sure the art is large enough to enjoy from across the room.

If you have to squint to see it, the piece may be too small for that wall.

Keep the art that makes you happy each time you see it.

My ideas to decorate above your bed can help you choose artwork and other decor that looks beautiful above your headboard.

16. Add an Indoor Faux Tree Where You’ll Enjoy It

Indoor faux tree lit from below casts leafy shadows across a wall and wood ceiling at night.

An indoor faux tree can bring green color and height beside a bed, dresser, window, or open wall.

A faux olive tree, also called an artificial olive tree, works well because its slim branches reach up the wall without taking much floor space.

Set the tree where its branches won’t cover the curtains or brush against the door.

Cover a plain pot with a woven basket to add more warm color near the floor.

In a small bedroom, place one olive branch in a pottery vase instead.

During the day, the green leaves bring the restful look of nature into your bedroom.

After dark, an indoor plant spotlight can light the branches and cast beautiful shadows on the wall.

I added this faux olive tree to my space and placed small spotlights on the floor, aiming them up through the branches.

It’s an instant transformation!

I feel like I’m in my own cozy, resort suite!

Place the small light behind the planter and point it up through the leaves.

Move it after sunset until you find the glow and shadows you love.

I love the way one small light changes the whole space after dark.

You can enjoy the leafy green during the day and a beautiful glow when evening comes.

Enjoy Your Bedroom in Morning and Evening Light

Morning sun and lamp light can make the same neutral bedroom colors look very different.

A cream wall may look light in the morning and much more golden at night.

Check both kinds of light so you can love your choices all day long.

17. Hang Painted Boards for the Morning-and-Lamp Test

Three large bedroom paint samples in muted sage, soft blue-gray, and warm taupe beside cream bedding, a natural-fiber rug, and a glowing bedside lamp

Choose two or three colors to compare.

Try neutral bedroom paint colors such as taupe or greige, or add muted sage or soft blue-gray.

Paint each color on a separate large, lightweight board, and let the paint dry before you compare them.

Place the boards side by side near the bed.

If they’re light enough, use painter’s tape or removable strips to hold them against the wall.

These larger samples will show you much more than a tiny paint card or an online photo.

Look at the colors when the morning sun comes through the windows.

After dark, turn on the bedside lamps you use each night and look again.

A taupe that looks warm in the morning may look pinker or grayer under your lamps at night.

This paint is perfect for a one-coat job. It goes on smoothly and dries quickly too!

Move the boards beside your dresser, floor, and linen curtains to see how each shade looks with the pieces already in the room.

Keep your favorite boards in the room for a day or two before you make your choice.

The best paint color is the one you love in the morning sun and under your lamps at night.

18. Turn Down the Light as Bedtime Gets Closer

Warm neutral bedroom at night with bedside lamps, wall sconces above the bed, and a low accent light beside a chair

When evening comes, you may be ready to trade the bright ceiling light for a softer glow.

Bedside table lamps can make your bedroom feel much warmer at night.

Sit in bed and look toward each lamp.

Can you see the bare bulb?

If you can, the shade may be too short or the lamp may be too tall.

Choose a shade that hides the bulb from your eyes while still giving you enough light to read.

Dimmable bedside lamps give you brighter light for reading and a lower glow when you’re ready to settle in.

When your nightstands are small, plug-in wall sconces leave more room for a book, glasses, and a glass of water.

A low accent light beside a chair can brighten that area while the rest of the bedroom stays dim.

Blackout curtains for bedroom windows can block streetlights and early morning sun.

They also add a full layer of fabric around the window.

At night, close the curtains, settle into bed, and turn on the lamps you plan to use.

Notice how the light changes your walls, bedding, and furniture.

You can wake to colors you love and settle under warm lamp light at night.

Enjoy Cream and White Without Worrying About Every Mark

Cream and white can make a bedroom look light, warm, and so restful.

You may still want to sip your morning coffee in bed while your pet curls up beside you.

Choosing bedding, rugs, and upholstered pieces that are easy to clean lets you enjoy those moments without worrying about every little mark.

19. Choose Pale Fabrics You Can Clean

Cream upholstered bed with layered white bedding, dark wood nightstands, black-framed windows, and exposed ceiling beams

Begin with the pieces most likely to collect pet hair or catch a spill from morning coffee or an evening snack.

A cotton duvet cover comes off the duvet insert, so you can wash the cover separately.

When you compare neutral bedding sets, look past the pretty photo and check exactly what comes in the package.

Some sets include only the duvet cover and shams, even when the photo shows sheets, pillows, and a throw.

Read the washing directions while you’re there.

A washable bedroom rug can also make cream and beige easier to enjoy when pets share the room.

When you shop for a pale upholstered bed online, zoom in on the fabric photos and look through customer photos before you buy.

Compare pictures taken in daylight with those taken under bedroom lamps because cream and beige may look warmer after dark.

Customer reviews may tell you more about the true color, softness, snags, cleaning, and how much pet hair clings to the fabric.

If pets share your bedroom, look for tightly woven upholstery with care directions you can follow at home.

Oatmeal, flax, and taupe keep the room light while making everyday marks less noticeable than on bright white.

Choose pale pieces so you can enjoy your bedroom instead of worrying about every little mark.

Then you can bring in your morning coffee or let a pet hop onto the bed without holding your breath.

Refresh Your Neutral Bedroom Without Starting Over

You may already have a bed, dresser, and nightstands you love.

A new duvet cover, curtains, bedroom area rug, and pillow covers can give the whole room a beautiful new look.

If you enjoy shopping for the entire look at once, choose the duvet cover, curtains, rug, and pillow covers together.

Repeat two or three colors across those pieces so everything looks beautiful together when the packages arrive.

20. Let One Large Fabric Lead the New Look

Warm neutral bedroom with cream bedding, rust pillows and throw, taupe curtains, dark wood furniture, and brass lighting.

Stand in the bedroom doorway and think about which new fabric would make the biggest difference.

A duvet cover, curtains, bedroom area rug, or quilt can set the colors for the whole refresh.

Use that piece to lead your shopping, even if you plan to order everything in one sitting.

One large fabric will shape the room more than five small decorations placed on different surfaces.

Maybe you begin with a cream linen duvet cover that makes the whole bed look lighter.

Pair it with a caramel quilt, brown faux fur throw blanket, and pillow covers that repeat those warm shades.

If a patterned rug catches your eye first, pull two of its colors into the bedding and curtains.

When you shop online, open the product photos in separate tabs and look at them side by side.

Look for repeats of cream, taupe, brown, or charcoal instead of trying to find exact matches.

Fresh pillow covers are an easy way to bring in more color or pattern.

Keep the inserts you already own and shop for the covers you’re excited to use.

Let one large fabric lead the look, then shop for all the layers that will make it beautiful.

When the packages arrive, you can place the new pieces around the room and watch the whole look come together.

21. Leave Room for Your Taste to Change

bedroom with tv accent wall

As you browse neutral master bedroom ideas, notice the larger pieces you would enjoy with more than one color.

Maybe it’s a wood slat TV accent wall, an upholstered bed, a solid wood dresser, or warm wood nightstands.

Those pieces can give your bedroom a beautiful look for years.

Then have fun shopping for the duvet cover, curtains, pillow covers, throw, lamps, and wall art that make you excited to finish the room now.

Cream bedding and a soft gray throw may be perfect today.

Next winter, you may want to bring in caramel, chocolate brown, or black.

The upholstered bed and warm wood can look beautiful with every one of those colors.

When another shade catches your eye, repeat it on a throw and two pillow covers.

That may be enough to give the bedroom a whole new look.

Keep favorite pillow covers and throws in a bedroom storage bench so you can enjoy them again during another season.

You can shop for the whole look today and still change a few layers later.

You can love the bedroom you create now and still have fun changing it later.

Neutral Bedroom Ideas for a Peaceful Retreat That Feels Like You

Warm neutral bedroom with brown walls, cream bedding, two bedside lamps, an upholstered bench, and a reading chair by the window.

The best neutral bedroom ideas let you enjoy your room from morning until night.

Morning light can fall across creamy bedding and a bedroom area rug that feels warm under your feet.

Later, a comfortable chair and a faux fur throw can make your bedroom a wonderful place to read, rest, or catch your breath.

When evening comes, bedside lamps bring out the warm wood, soft fabric, and deeper neutral colors you chose.

That’s why the Morning-and-Lamp Test is worth doing before you paint your bedroom walls.

It helps you see which neutral bedroom paint colors look beautiful in the morning sun and under your lamps at night.

Once you choose a wall color you love, have a little fun with the pieces around it.

Your cream pillow doesn’t need a long-lost twin, and your nightstands don’t have to match.

An older dresser, favorite art, and a new linen duvet cover can all look beautiful in the same room.

Those small differences make the bedroom look like yours instead of a room copied from a showroom.

Keep the furniture and art you love, then have fun shopping for one new piece or everything you need to finish the look.

You don’t have to replace everything to see a wonderful change.

A lighter duvet cover can brighten the bed, while a chocolate brown throw or black lamp can bring in the contrast that was missing.

Add softness under your feet with a washable bedroom rug.

Easy-to-wash fabrics make cream and white much easier to enjoy when pets share the room.

If you’d like to add even more warmth, my cozy bedroom decorating ideas can help you make the room wonderfully comfortable during every part of the day.

A peaceful neutral bedroom can hold the pieces you love and still feel light, warm, and completely your own.

You can wake beneath colors that look beautiful in the morning and enjoy a private retreat when you need a break during the day.

Once you’ve designed your neutral bedroom just the way you want it, turn on your favorite lamp.

Pull the covers close and look around at the old and new pieces you brought together.

For a little while, the rest of the day can wait outside the bedroom door.

Nothing has to match perfectly, and nothing else needs to change tonight.

Take a deep breath and settle in.

You can feel so very glad this peaceful, beautiful retreat is yours.
